Amethyst

The pink to purple variety of quartz is called amethyst. The name is derived from the Greek word "methystos" which means, "not drunk". Old folklore has it that the stone would keep one from getting drunk.

Amethyst is wide spread throughout the world, with larger concentrations of the mineral in Brazil and Uruguay. This gem has a hardness of 7 and often is formed in large triangle crystals or in clusters such as those found in geodes. A popular gemstone, Amethyst (SiO2) has the same chemical makeup as citrine, rose quartz, and tiger-eye.
